How we know the battery is worn, since iPadOS won’t tell you

An iPhone shows a battery health percentage in Settings. An iPad does not: iPadOS has no such screen, so the «mine is down to 78 %» figure people quote from a phone simply does not exist on a tablet. The only honest way to know is to read the cell’s own counters: completed charge cycles, and the capacity it holds today against the capacity it left the factory with. That reading takes a few minutes over a diagnostic connection, it costs nothing here, and you get both numbers before anyone opens anything.

The reference point is Apple’s own: an iPad battery is designed to keep up to 80 % of its original capacity after 1,000 full charge cycles. A tablet charged most days crosses that somewhere around the four or five year mark. If the counters come back healthy we say so and look elsewhere, because a failing charger, a charge port packed with pocket lint or a single app sitting awake in the background all imitate a dead battery and none of them needs a new cell.

A swollen battery is the one you should not wait on

A lithium-polymer cell that has begun to swell is venting gas inside a sealed aluminium box, and the symptoms are physical rather than electrical: the glass lifts at one corner, the tablet rocks instead of sitting flat on a table, the case stops clipping shut, or the Home button sits proud of the front. Plenty of iPads keep working perfectly in that state, which is precisely why people leave them for months.

Do not keep charging it. Do not clamp it flat or press the glass back down, do not leave it in a hot car or at the bottom of a bag under pressure, and do not lever the screen off yourself: the cell sits directly beneath the panel, and puncturing it is what turns a repair into a fire. Power it off, carry it flat and bring it in. We discharge swollen cells under control and send them out through an authorised waste stream — recycling is one of the three things this business actually does.

Why an iPad battery is a bigger job than a phone battery

Three things make it slower. The cell holds three to four times the charge of a phone battery and is glued to the chassis along its whole length rather than clipped in. The glass is bonded to the frame, so the tablet has to be opened with controlled heat and thin blades — it is thin, unsupported at the corners, and the corners are where it cracks if anybody hurries. And on the Face ID iPad Pro the panel is a single laminated assembly: tear the digitiser flex and the part you now owe for costs several times the battery you came in for.

There is one detail on the Touch ID models that decides whether the repair is good or ruined. The Home button is paired to that specific logic board at the factory. It has to be transferred, never substituted — fit a new one and Touch ID is gone permanently, and no software brings it back. It is a five-second decision on the bench, and it is the difference between a tablet you can still unlock with your thumb and one you cannot.

When we will tell you it is not worth it

If the tablet no longer receives iPadOS updates, the glass is already cracked and the cell is flat, then three repairs added together land close to what a reconditioned unit costs — and we would rather say so than take the work. In that case we can buy the tablet from you for parts and recycling, or point you at a refurbished iPad that carries the same three-year warranty. The other direction is far more common, though: an iPad Air or an iPad Pro with a good screen is worth a battery every single time. You keep the tablet you already know how to use, and the amount involved is a fraction of replacing it.

New adhesive rather than tape, the display and digitiser flexes reseated, Touch ID or Face ID tested and working, the charge current measured, and the tablet run up to 100 % and held there to confirm it genuinely holds.
