What goes wrong with iPhone cameras

A drop can damage the camera module or crack the rear glass that protects it. Dust can sneak behind the lens, the focus motor can fail, or a software conflict can freeze the app. On some models the stabiliser rattles after an impact — all of these are repairable.

Three free checks before you bring it in

Some camera faults are not a camera fault at all, and it costs you nothing to rule them out at home. First, force restart the phone: on the iPhone 8 and later, press volume up, press volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. A camera process that has hung is common and a restart clears it.

Second, check that it is not a restriction. Settings, then Screen Time, then Content and Privacy Restrictions, then Allowed Apps, then Camera. With that switch off the icon disappears from the home screen or the app opens to a black rectangle, and every year we see phones booked in for exactly that.

Third, open the camera from inside another app — FaceTime, WhatsApp, the Instagram camera. If the front camera works in FaceTime but not in the Camera app, the fault is software and not hardware. If it is black everywhere, it is the module. And take the case off before you test anything, for the reason in the next section.

If one of those three fixes it, you owe us nothing and you never needed us. We would far rather tell you that on WhatsApp than book the device in.

Magnets and the stabiliser — the fault nobody warns you about

From the iPhone 6 Plus onwards, almost every model stabilises its main rear camera optically: a lens group suspended on fine springs and steered by magnetic coils thousands of times a second. From the 12 Pro Max onward it is the sensor itself that moves. A mechanism built around magnets is, by construction, sensitive to other magnets — and the accessory market is full of strong ones. Cheap MagSafe copies, magnetic car and motorcycle mounts, magnetic tripod adapters and some wallet cases are all capable of interfering with it.

The symptoms are recognisable once you know them: a rattle you can hear if you shake the phone gently next to your ear, photographs that smear in low light while daylight shots look fine, or video that judders as though someone were tapping the phone. Sometimes the accessory is the entire problem, removing it restores everything and the repair costs nothing. Sometimes the coil assembly is genuinely damaged, usually after a drop onto a hard floor, and the module is replaced. We test with the case off before quoting either way.

Lens cover or whole module — why the table above has two columns

On most iPhones the hard lens cover that protects the camera is a separate part from the camera sitting underneath it, and that is exactly what the second column of the price list is. If the cover has cracked but the lens behind it is clean, focus still locks and pictures come out sharp, we change the cover on its own and you pay a fraction of the module price. Where the list shows a dash instead of a figure, that model does not split the two and the module is the only route.

What decides it is not how bad the crack looks. It is whether dust or moisture has got past the cover — if water is involved, read the water damage page first — and whether autofocus still hunts and locks. So we test at every focal length the phone has before we quote, rather than pricing from a photograph sent over WhatsApp. That message is fine for booking you in; the number comes after we have looked.

The front camera, Face ID, and the warning we give before starting

On every Face ID iPhone the front camera is not a standalone part. It sits inside the TrueDepth assembly alongside the dot projector and the flood illuminator, and that assembly is paired to your specific handset at the factory. Fitting a generic front-camera flex is the most common way Face ID gets destroyed permanently in a repair done without care, and no software restores it afterwards.

We transfer the original components wherever the model allows it. Where a repair genuinely cannot preserve Face ID we tell you before we start, not when you come to collect. The same goes for the notice iOS displays on the iPhone 12 and later when it cannot verify a camera it does not recognise: you should hear about that from us in advance, together with the alternatives, rather than read it on your own screen a week later.

What gets tested before you get it back

Every lens at every focal length the phone has — the ultra wide, the main lens and the 2×, 3× or 5× telephoto where it exists — autofocus in low light, the flash, Portrait mode, which on dual-camera models needs both rear cameras working and leans on the LiDAR scanner for low-light focus on the Pro, video stabilisation, the front camera, a fresh Face ID enrolment and the microphone that records alongside video, because it sits close enough to the module to be disturbed by the work. Three-year warranty on the part and on the labour. If the back glass is cracked as well, that is quoted with the screen and glass work rather than with the camera.
